Today we begin the third week of the summer program. For those that have been disciplined and motivated enough to complete the first two weeks, congratulations. You no doubt are feeling great about yourselves. It's no easy feat to embark on something like this and stick to it. Keep up the outstanding work.
For those that haven't been participating, what are you waiting for? Do you think you'll improve your strength, fitness and quality on the ball by not doing anything? Is it possible to become stronger, faster and improving a highly technical skill by not doing anything to help you grow stronger, become faster and become more technical? Ladies, the first official practice for your high school teams is July 23. That is 4 weeks away. I'm sure there will be some kind of fitness test. Will you be prepared to pass that test? Whether or not you feel that a fitness test is silly or that a fitness test doesn't mean anything to you, I can assure with 100% certainty that it means very much to your coach and 9 times out of 10, a player's level of fitness and that player's amount of playing time are highly correlated. Only 11 players are on the field during a game. Everyone knows how large high school rosters are. Heck, I went to a number of games last year and there were a few teams whose benches looked like the Detroit Lions sideline they had so many players over there. How are you going to force yourself onto that field with that many players competing for so few spots? You've got 4 weeks. Start today by doing something. Then do something tomorrow. Gain some momentum. Strive for consistency. July 23 will be here before you know it.
Fellas, the same thing applies to you. There are 20 players on this team with 11 spots on the field. What are you doing right now to make one of those spots yours? Your preseason will begin shortly after the girls' high school preseason. I can assure you that it's not enough to only do something soccer-related during a formal training or game. No one ever got close to fulfilling their potential by only touching the ball during a training or game. It's never too late to improve. The answer to the question, "Coach, what can I do to get better?" is to do something, do anything and do it every day.
Speaking of doing something, here are a few shots of Coach Phil doing some inverted rows, Matteo knocking out some bench dips using the living room sofa, as well as Haymar killing it on the makeshift pull ups bar at the lake - proving that you can do the work anywhere.
